Ouray – A small plane crashed on White Horse Mountain in southwestern Colorado, killing four people, the Civil Air Patrol reported Friday night.
The single-engine Cessna was en route from Cables, Calif., to Elbert when it was reported missing Thursday, the CAP said.
Three men and one woman were aboard the plane, officials said. Their remains were found in the wreckage, the CAP said. But Lt. Col. Earl Sherwin, air patrol director of operations, said he had no information on their names or ages Friday night.
The CAP said terrain and avalanche dangers were too great to attempt to recover the bodies Friday evening, but that a rescue would be coordinated with Ouray County when conditions improve.
The CAP said the plane left California on Wednesday, but no flight plans had been filed.
The plane was reported overdue Thursday, and searchers used radar information to narrow their search to southwestern Colorado, the CAP said.
Wreckage was scattered across a wide area on White House Mountain west of Ouray, Sherwin said.
Five planes and 20 volunteers from the Colorado Civil Air Patrol participated in the search.
