The Indonesian government has lifted a travel ban imposed on six Newmont Mining Corp. employees who are under investigation for the alleged polluting of a fishing bay, the company said Thursday.
The men – two Americans, an Australian and three Indonesians – were not allowed to leave the country for nearly seven months. Police detained five of them for a month last fall.
The men must report to prosecutors once a week, said Newmont spokesman Doug Hock. “In essence they’re on parole without ever having been charged,” he said.
American Rick Ness, 55, recently traveled to Singapore, and American Bill Long, 58, went to the Philippines, Hock said, but neither has returned to the United States.
In January, Ness was unable to attend the funeral of his 20-month-old grandson, Hock said.
