Forty-five members of Congress signed a letter sent Friday to the acting secretary of the Air Force, urging a thorough and public investigation into accusations of religious intolerance at the Air Force Academy.

An Air Force task force visited the academy this month to examine the religious climate at the school.

The academy launched a religious-tolerance training program in March after hearing complaints from people who believe Christians, especially evangelicals, are favored over non-Christians.

Rep. Lois Capps, D-Calif., drafted the letter and circulated it for signatures. Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette of Denver signed.

“I expect this investigation to be thorough and the results to be made public,” Capps said. “The young men and women who volunteer to defend our nation should be able enjoy religious freedoms, a bedrock principle upon which the United States stands and the Air Force is meant to defend.”

The task force is expected to deliver its report Monday to the acting secretary, Michael Dominguez.
