Air Force junior first to win NCAA match
Air Force junior Shannon Buck became the first player in school history to win a match at the NCAA Division I men’s tennis singles championships with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 victory Wednesday over Josh Cohen of the University of Miami.
Buck, ranked 67th in the country, will face Izak van der Merwe of Old Dominion in the second round today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
Virginia Commonwealth’s Arnaud Lecloerec defeated University of Denver freshman Adam Holmstrom 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) to advance to the round of 32.
Warden announces CSU women’s basketball staff
Colorado State women’s basketball coach Jen Warden announced the hiring of three assistant coaches: Kristin Becker, Heath Alexander and Randie Wirt.
“Colorado State is fortunate to add these three coaches to its ranks,” Warden said. “They believe in our mission, and I know we will enjoy our journey together. They bring tremendous recruiting experience as well as postseason experience to the table, and want nothing less than to continue the tradition that the Rams have established.”
Becker will join the Rams as the first assistant coach, and will be the recruiting coordinator.
She was previously an assistant coach at Kansas State from 1998-2004. During her tenure, the Wildcats broke into the top 25 for the first time in 18 years and have been ranked nationally since.
Alexander, who will serve as the second assistant coach, was previously an assistant coach at Oregon State, for which he was a member of the staff from 2001-05.
Wirt will be the third assistant coach. Wirt played at the University of Colorado from 2000-04, including two seasons with Warden as one of her coaches, and earned a psychology degree in 2004.
Wirt competed internationally for BC Nokia in Nokia, Finland, where she won the Naisten SM-sarja league championship.
“All Randie knows is winning,” Warden said. “From high school to college to pro, Randie finds a way to get it done.”
All three coaches will be responsible for scouting, recruiting and player development.
