Cash and prizes worth $1,000 are offered for the second annual Wolford Mountain Reservoir open-water fishing contest Saturday. A $20 entry fee is required for the 6 a.m.-4 p.m. event at the reservoir near Kremmling.

A kids division features free entry. Prizes will be determined by a total weight of two fish, and proceeds will be used for a fish stocking program. For registration, call 970-724-9407 or 866-472-4943.

Calling all trail workers

Volunteers who would like to join a Trout Unlimited group in improving the trail to Cheesman Canyon on Monday should report to the trailhead parking lot off Road 126, 4 miles west of Deckers, by 9 a.m.

Participants should bring work gloves, hiking shoes, adequate water supply, lunch and, perhaps, fishing gear for a session scheduled to end at 3 p.m. Similar workdays are scheduled June 28, July 16 and Sept. 17. For information, call 303-791-1932.

Women’s cast and blast

A Division of Wildlife-sponsored clinic will offer instruction in fly-fishing and shotgun shooting June 25 in Silverthorne. Space is limited to 16 participants in each event. Entry fee is $15 and information may be obtained by phoning 970-725-6200 or 970-255-6191.

Poaching fine levied

A Montrose resident, Jason R. Duggan, must pay nearly $7,000 in fines and may be banned from hunting or fishing in Colorado and 19 other states following a conviction on wildlife violations.

Duggan, 19, was cited for illegally killing eight deer, nine ducks and various protected small mammals and faces a jail sentence of one year should he fail to pay the fine.
