Give Rockies a cheer, support

A stitch in time saves nine.

I’ve never really understood that quote/rhyme, but for one night, the Rockies had a spectacular nine.

Eddie Pells of The Associated Press led with: “(Jason Jennings) shut down one of the best lineups in baseball. He outclassed one of the top pitchers in the game. He did it at the toughest pitcher’s park around.”

Of course, Pells wasn’t just acknowledging Jennings’ (revitalized) potential, he was observing Jennings’ record-breaking 25th victory in the Colorado organization and – more important – at Coors Field.

For one sports day, the Rockies earned a legitimate place in the spotlight – and not because they gave the Cardinals a decent game and the fans a great fireworks show, but because they won a pitching battle. Against the best. At Coors Field.

It was only the 11th time in Coors history a game has been held to three runs or fewer. I haven’t had the time to research the specifics, but I’m guessing the Rox have won fewer than half of those. I would wager that most of those games featured a future Hall of Famer of the non-Rockie variety.

So here’s to the foreign concept that maybe, just maybe, we saw two Hall of Famers on the mound tonight. For one day, at the very least: Let’s celebrate our Rox, toast their potential and even show up for a game this season. I know I will.

Cameron Lee, Boulder

(Editor’s note: The Rockies won six of the 11 games at Coors Field in which three runs or fewer were scored.)
