COLDWATER: North Michigan Lake

With most rivers and streams blown out by runoff, trout fishermen are pretty much confined to lakes. North Michigan Lake, a small, jewel-like body of water surrounded by tall timber in scenic North Park, has plenty of trout, good camping facilities and can be reached without four-wheel drive.

In short, it’s a good place to take the kids.

It contains brook trout, German browns and cutbows. Most of the fish are 10 to 12 inches long and easily caught on bait, lures or flies. Stream fishing above and below the reservoir is also good.

WARMWATER: Pueblo Reservoir

Runoff from the Arkansas River has discolored the upper half of Pueblo Reservoir but the lower waters are clear and fishing is good.

Most of Pueblo’s walleyes are above the 18-inch size limit. They are hanging in 13 to 20 feet of water and hitting on jigs tipped with night crawlers.

The best action is along the dropoff from Sailboard Flats near the dam, but anglers have been catching them all over the lake, even where the water is discolored. Most wipers are caught by anglers in boats simply because they move around a lot.
