Mattei
2001 Piemonte Barbera

(Imported by Summa Vitis LLC, Sonoma, Calif.; about $12)

This might just be the only wine you need for Thanksgiving dinner this year. A cherry-hued Barbera from Piemonte in Italy’s northern reaches, it’s as light as its see-through cherry color predicts, meaning it won’t cover up the flavors of the juicy turkey meat, yet it has the spice to match Aunt Betty’s nutmeg-dusted sweet-potato pie and the tanginess to stand up to brother Adam’s mustard-coated Brussels sprouts.

And the leftovers, if by some miracle everyone doesn’t drink it all up, will be delicious with turkey sandwiches. At about $12, it’s a wine you should scoop up now before I buy it all.
