Outward Bound is a long-running national program that helps people thrive in challenging outdoor conditions, individually and as teams. The Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center does the same for people of disability.
The BOEC was one of several Colorado organizations named Thursday to split $165,000 donated by the Avalanche and Nuggets community funds, in accord with the McCormick Tribune Foundation.
“It’s an honor for us,” said Jennifer Sloan, a year-round activities coordinator with the BOEC.
“In the summer season, we do things like rafting, high-ropes course and team building. We’ve been in operation since 1976.”
The grants go to nonprofit organizations for espousing what the donors say is a belief in “teamwork, sportsmanship, character building, health and active lifestyles and accessibility to people of all abilities.”
Other recipients are Adaptive Adventures, Colorado Wheelchair Sports, Easter Seals Colorado, Denver Police Activities League, Colorado HAWKS, Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center, Denver Children’s Home and the YMCA Metro Denver Junior Nuggets Program.
According to a release from Kroenke Sports, the Avalanche and Nuggets funds, along with the McCormick Foundation, have combined to grant more than $31 million to 325 non- profit Colorado organizations since 1992.
