What a whopper

The net broke. One hook was completely gone, the other hanging thinly by a single strand of split ring wire.

No matter, Salt Lake City angler Dan Porter still managed to land a 38 1/2-pound striped bass June 16 at Lake Powell with an able assist from his brother Mike and, perhaps, the fishing gods.

The Porters were tolling five colors of lead line near the Dry Rock Creek inlet south of Bullfrog when the big fish took a deep Thunderstick.

The fish measured 42 inches long and might have weighed that many pounds had it not spawned the previous week. The Lake Powell striper record is 48 pounds.
