Two women drowned in a holiday accident when their boat, carrying six people, flipped in rough waters Saturday at Boyd Lake State Park near Loveland.

The names of the women were unavailable.

A man and five women were in the boat when it tipped over in the large, popular lake just west of the Fort Collins/Loveland Airport, Loveland Fire Battalion Chief Robert Skillman said.

“At this time, we think the weather might have played a part in this tragedy,” he said.

A nursing supervisor at McKee Medical Center in Loveland confirmed that two women who appeared to be middle-aged died after arriving at the hospital.

A man and another woman were admitted to the hospital with injuries. The two other women were treated and released, the nursing supervisor said.

The boat flipped at about 5:45 p.m., dumping its occupants into the reservoir, Skillman said.

“At that time, we had a significant thunderstorm move in with very high winds,” Skillman said.
