Who: Margie Hall, Denver; Peggy and Pat Kerns, Aurora; Sue Clark, Denver
Where: Ortigia, Sicily
Out and about: Beautiful scenery and people, rich history, good food and plentiful local wine. This describes our eight days in Sicily for a culinary and cultural tour hosted by Togrand
mothershousewego.com Our base was Ortigia, in Siracusa, on the Sicilian coast. Days were filled with trips to fish and produce markets and historic sites and cooking classes. We ate fabulous food – local fresh fish, eggplant, sun-dried and fresh tomatoes, pecorino cheeses, fresh ricotta and lots of pasta. A real treat was the three days we spent in the Madonie Mountains with Giovanna and Wanda Tornabene, James Beard Award-
winning authors who shared family recipes.
Travel tip: Pack an extra bag to take advantage of the wonderful offerings at the daily food market in places like Ortigia that capture the spirit of Sicily. We brought back sun-dried cherry tomatoes and tomato paste, capers, olives and olive oil, almond paste, herbs and pecorino cheeses, some filled with pistachio nuts or arugula.
