Abby Waner of ThunderRidge High School scored 12 points for the U.S. women’s U19 team in its 82-42 victory over Hungary in a pre-world championship game in Budapest.

Waner, who will play at Duke this season, was one of three guards in the U.S. starting lineup, playing only 16 minutes Saturday as the Americans started the rout early, leading 25-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Waner was 5-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range. The team is 5-0 in exhibition play before the world championships, which begin Friday in Tunisia.

Hardrock 100 winner

Karl Meltzer became the first three-time men’s champion of the Hardrock 100 on Saturday, finishing 93 minutes ahead of defending champion Paul Sweeney of Truckee, Calif., in the ultramarathon in the San Juan Mountains.

Meltzer, of Sandy, Utah, finished in 28 hours, 29 minutes to join four-time winner Betsy Kalmeyer as the only runners to win the race more than twice.

Sue Johnston of Waterford, Vt., won her second Hardrock, finishing in 32:07 on a course that featured nearly 66,000 feet in elevation change.

The race, which had its inaugural run in 1992, started in Silverton and looped near or through the old mining towns of Lake City, Ouray and Telluride before ending back in Silverton.

This year’s race started with 125 runners, but only 14 had finished and at least 23 others had dropped out by late Saturday.

Runners have until 6 a.m. today to complete the race.
