More doves on menu

Colorado hunters may target two additional dove species when the season opens Sept. 1. White-winged doves, indigenous to North America, can be included as part of the regular 15-bird daily bag. The Eurasian collared dove also may be hunted and counted as an addition to the bag – provided hunters leave the feathers attached before leaving the field. These exotics are considerably larger than mourning doves, more brownish in color, with a rounded tail.

Walleye testimony on hold

The Colorado Wildlife Commission agreed last week to wait until its August workshop to hear testimony from members of the Colorado Walleye Association concerning proposed rule changes for the species. CWA members generally are promoting more restrictive statewide limits – five daily, 10 in possession, along with a 15-inch minimum, one fish exceeding 22 inches – as part of the current regulation-setting process. Final commission decisions regarding all fish regulations for the period 2006-2010 will be made in September.

New area managers

The Division of Wildlife has announced appointments to fill four vacant area wildlife manager positions. Bill deVergie has been appointed to the post in Meeker, Shaun Deeney to Colorado Springs, Lyle Sidener to Hot Sulphur Springs and Perry Will to Montrose. All have extensive experience in district posts in various parts of the state.
