The Colorado Mammoth is likely to choose a left-handed shooter or a defender with the sixth pick in today’s National Lacrosse League dispersal draft.
Sixteen members of the defunct Anaheim Storm are being scattered across the 11-team NLL, after two seasons at Arrowhead Pond. The Storm, which relocated from New Jersey, averaged 4,750 fans in 2004 and went 1-15. It improved to 5-11 in 2005, including a 10-6 victory over the Mammoth, but drew just 4,829.
Because of contract issues, former Mammoth forward Shawn Cable (21 goals, 27 assists, 48 points) and forward Richard Morgan (18-10-28) were excluded from the draft and declared unrestricted free agents, allowing them to sign with any team.
Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said Tuesday he is interested in signing Morgan and drafting his brother, Peter, also a powerful left-hander, if Peter Morgan is available when Colorado makes its pick.
Defender Bruce Murray is also of interest to Govett, along with defenders Cam Bergman, Bill Greer and Damien Davis.
Edmonton is likely to select Anaheim scoring leader Casey Powell with the first pick. Goal- tender Matt Roik, who was the difference in the win over Colorado, and forward Ryan Powell (15-31-46) also are expected to be taken early.
Among the area connections, Storm defender Chad Wittman is from Colorado Springs and the University of Denver, and former DU player Mike Law is on Anaheim’s holdout list after attending DU law school last season instead of playing for the Storm.
