Vickers’ son killed in traffic accident
Preston Vickers, son of The International golf tournament founder Jack Vickers, died in a traffic accident on Interstate 25 near Larkspur. Preston Vickers, 47, is survived by two sons, Alan and Justin. He was Jack Vickers’ second-oldest son in a family of seven.
International picks juniors
The International announced its junior golfers for the five- hole scramble event Aug. 1 at Castle Pines Golf Club.
Selected to compete were Zach Cuseo, 14, of Littleton; Courtney Dudley, 17, of Arvada; Chris Keirns, 15, of Thornton; Tucker Legerski, 16, of Pueblo; Chris Lorenzini, 17, of Colorado Springs; Audrey Moton, 16, of Castle Rock; Emma Watson, 17, of Cedaredge; and Rachel Weeks, 17, of Lakewood. They will play holes 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18.
Champ leads stroke play
Reigning Colorado Golf Association State Public Links champion Zen Brown of Indian Tree Golf Course shot a second consecutive 67 to take the lead in the CGA Junior Stroke Play Championship at Aurora Hills Golf Course. His 10-under-par 134 gives him a one-stroke lead over 2004 5A state champion Riley Andrews of The Links.
Lakewood teen makes national hockey team
Tyler Rueggsegger of Lakewood will represent the United States in international hockey competition after being named to the national under-18 select team, which will compete at the Junior World Cup from Aug. 9-14 in Piestany, Slovakia, and Breclav, Czech Republic.
Waner points U.S. to rout
Abby Waner scored 12 points as the U.S. women’s under-19 basketball team beat Puerto Rico 116-28 in preliminary play at the world championships in Tunisia. The former ThunderRidge star shot 5-for-9, including two 3-pointers. The Americans play South Korea today in the final game of preliminaries.
Escatel picks Fort Lewis
Vanessa Escatel of Brighton High School has accepted a scholarship offer to run cross country at Fort Lewis College. She was a three-time league champion in her prep career.
