Houston – Kansas State’s quarterback competition between Denver native Allen Webb and Dylan Meier is about to heat up.
Wildcats coach Bill Snyder said nothing has been decided, but he expects Webb and Meier to battle during preseason practice.
“What I appreciate is the opportunity for it to be very, very competitive,” Snyder said. “When you have those kinds of opportunities for young guys to compete against each other at a particular spot, you would like to think that, if they are competitive young guys, it will help improve each one of them.”
Meier, who was in and out of the lineup last season because of injuries, is in the final stages of recovering from shoulder surgery. He played in 10 games last season, completing 127-of-220 passes for 1,436 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions.
Webb, who starred at Denver South and Chatfield high schools, also played in 10 games, starting five. He completed 49-of-94 passes for 521 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. He ran for 418 yards and eight touchdowns.
While it may appear Webb has the edge in overall athleticism while Meier is the better passer, Snyder isn’t so sure.
“The two of them, I think, are even, though most people would look at them and say they are diametrically opposed in terms of what their skills are,” Snyder said. “I think they are somewhat similar. Both of them would like to be our No. 1 quarterback. It remains to be seen exactly which one that will be.”
Tough love
New Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy may be player- friendly, he has been tough as well.
Since taking over in January for Les Miles, who went to LSU, Gundy has dismissed five players for various infractions of team policies.
“I am a firm believer that they want to be treated fairly, they want to be pushed to the limit and they want to be disciplined,” Gundy said.
Young on White
Texas quarterback Vince Young wasn’t a fan of how Oklahoma quarterback Jason White conducted himself during the Sooners’ loss to Southern Cal in the Orange Bowl, last season’s national title game.
“He was just walking around not saying anything to the guys,” Young said. “You have to keep telling everybody to believe in each other. I thought that Jason White should have done more being a leader for the team.”
