Police have arrested a homicide suspect who they say fatally shot his estranged wife and wounded her boyfriend in a confrontation in Pueblo last month.
Duane Manzanares, 38, had been a fugitive since the 4 a.m. June 1 shooting of his wife, Erica Manzanares, 30, who had three children. The boyfriend, David Bryant, 19, survived a gunshot to the head.
Manzanares is being held for investigation of first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder, said Sgt. Elias Manzanares, Pueblo police spokesman.
Pueblo investigators on Wed nesday night were watching an apartment in the 2600 block of West Evans Avenue in Denver where Duane Manzanares had been staying, said the officer, who is not related to Duane Manzanares.
When the detectives saw Manzanares leave the apartment, they called Denver SWAT team members at about 8:30 p.m. to make the arrest, said Denver police spokeswoman Virginia Lopez. Manzanares did not resist arrest.
The suspect had recently separated from his wife before he confronted her June 1. Some of their children witnessed the shootings, Sgt. Manzanares said.
State criminal records show that Duane Manzanares has been arrested numerous times for violent crimes, including domestic violence, assault and menacing, dating to 1986. In 1993 and 1994, Manzanares served jail sentences for two assault cases.
In 1995, he was convicted of possession of a gun and served jail time. That same year, he was sentenced to two years in prison for bail-bond violations. In 2002, he was sentenced to six months in jail for drunken driving.
