Defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s soccer champion Fort Lewis opened its season Thursday with a convincing 5-1 win over host Northeastern (Okla.) State.

Junior John Cunliffe had two goals and an assist.

The Colorado Mines women’s team kicked off its inaugural year with a 1-0 overtime win over Midland Lutheran in Golden.

Mules stymie Grizzlies

Adams State’s highly touted defense lived up to its billing, holding Central Missouri State to just 268 yards of total offense. But the Mules’ defense was equally impressive, holding the Grizzlies to 7 yards rushing in Central Missouri’s 14-6 win in Warrensburg, Mo.

Adams State scored midway through the first quarter on Wayne Durham’s 31-yard field goal. The Mules responded a little more than a minute later as Mike Spiegel found Micah Hefner for a 63-yard touchdown play.

The Grizzlies closed to within a point in the third quarter after a field goal. Adams State was on its 6-yard line when quarterback Scott Coxon mishandled the snap. The Mules’ Dustin Patton fell on the ball in the end zone for the final score.

U.S. volleyball wins

Dave McKienzie of Littleton and David Lee of Alpine, Calif., each had eight points to lead the U.S. men’s national volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Barbados at the FIVB world championship qualifying tournament in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Watts finishes third

Andrea Watts of Lone Tree shot an 11-over-par 221 to finish third at the Philadelphia Runner Junior, an American Junior Golf Association event, at French Creek Golf Club in Elverson, Pa.
