With costs estimated at $2.1 million to clean up recent rock slides, Gov. Bill Owens signed an emergency declaration Friday that would allow the state to seek federal money for the project.

Three rock slides hit Interstate 70 just west of Idaho Springs earlier this month, temporarily closing all lanes of the highway. Although the highway was reopened five days after the slide, the Colorado Department of Transportation has more work to do to stabilize the area.

The state will ask for federal emergency relief funding to help cover the cost to clear debris, repair the highway and construct repairs to the rock-slide site.
