Golden – Garrett Mehl threw three touchdown passes and scored three more on the ground Saturday to lead the Colorado School of Mines to a 45-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over Western State.

Mehl threw touchdown passes to Corey Huck and Derek Dykstra in the first quarter, then ran in two scores in the second to give the Orediggers a 28-0 lead.

Mehl completed 23-of-33 passes for 249 yards and rushed for 114 yards. Mines (1-2, 1-0) finished with 606 total yards. Western State (0-3, 0-1) ended with 291.

Jordan Gage returned a Mehl interception 74 yards in the second quarter to make it 28-7.

Western State quarterback Daniel Brethauer completed 18-of-41 passes for 255 yards and one touchdown, an 18-yard strike to Tyrel Davies that made it 42-13 in the third quarter.

Adams State 28, Chadron State 23

Alamosa – Marcus Sias had 127 total yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Adams State to an RMAC victory over Chadron State – the Grizzlies’ first victory against the Eagles since 1999.

Sias rushed for two touchdowns and caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Scott Coxon.

Coxon completed 20-of-29 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns for Adams State (1-2, 1-0). Danny Woodhead led Chadron State (0-3, 0-1) with 181 rushing yards, 83 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Adams State senior linebacker Adam McGurk had 14 tackles and broke the Division II career sack record, notching 1 1/2 sacks to bring his career total to 29 1/2.

Chadron State quarterback Tyler Hidrogo completed 12-of-24 passes for 254 yards and one touchdown, threw two interceptions and was sacked four times.

Fort Lewis 31, Mesa State 12

Durango – Matt Gutierrez threw three touchdown passes and ran 69 yards for another score to lead Fort Lewis to an RMAC victory over Mesa State.

Gutierrez finished with 103 rushing yards and was 14-for-24 for 253 passing yards. Mikael Bjork added a 51-yard field goal in the first quarter for Fort Lewis (1-1, 1-0).

The Skyhawks led 24-0 before Tyler Johnson kicked a 26-yard field goal with 6:22 to go before halftime to put Mesa State (0-3, 0-1) on the scoreboard. Sean McGraw, who was 12-for-25 for 116 passing yards, scored the Mavericks’ only touchdown on a 5-yard run at 14:15 in the fourth.

Whittier 29, Colorado College 26

Colorado Springs – Whittier College of California scored on its first possession of overtime to beat Colorado College at Washburn Field in the season opener for both teams. The Poets’ Josh Scurlock threw a 5-yard pass to Kevin Cullina for the winner. The Tigers’ Chris Neal was 25-of-44 passing for 218 yards and three touchdowns.
