Getting your player ready...

Who: Marilyn and Alex Callender of Denver

Where: Katz’s Delicatessen, Manhattan’s Lower East Side

Out and about: Eating the local food has always been a big part of our travel. Here we are sharing a $13 pastrami sandwich in Katz’s Deli, which is more than 100 years old and one of the few delis that still makes its own corned beef and pastrami. This deli was where Meg Ryan demonstrated her acting talents in “When Harry Met Sally …” was filmed. Zagat’s restaurant guide describes the corned beef as “orgasm-inducing” and the pastrami as “heavenly.” The pastrami was delicious, milder than what we get in Denver.

Travel tip: When you enter the restaurant, everyone is handed a little ticket on which your purchases are written. Don’t lose your ticket; there is a minimum $50 exit charge if you do. We had lunch at about 1:30, and the crowd was not too bad. I would imagine that it would be very crowded during the lunch hour. We like to get a couple of dining guides for areas we are traveling to and compare them when picking restaurants. We had a delicious pizza at Lombardi’s, which is the first restaurant to serve pizza in the United States, and a wonderful seven-course tasting menu at Babbo, one of Mario Batali’s restaurants.
