Michael Harrington of the Kissing Camels Golf Club shot a second-round 71 on Saturday to lead the three- round 2005 CGA Mid-Amateur Championship at the par-72 Haymaker Golf Course in Steamboat Springs.

Harrington’s two-day total of 141 puts him one stroke ahead of 2003 champion Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club. Dean Clapp of Meadow Hills is in third place at 148. First-round leader and seven-time champion Rick DeWitt of West Woods shot an 81 in his second round to tie for sixth place with Steve Murphy of Canterberry.

Buffs golfers place fifth in New Mexico

Three late-round double bogeys dropped the University of Colorado men’s golf team to a fifth-place finish at the University of New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque.

The Buffaloes, paced by redshirt freshman Derek Tolan, began the final round in third place, but after shooting 1-under on the front nine of the 7,350-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Course, they fell to an 872 finish. UNLV finished at 851 to win the tournament. Tolan, playing in his first major collegiate meet, shot a final-round 72 to finish at 2-under 214, good for a tie for eighth. UNLV’s Andres Gonzales took medalist honors after shooting a final-round 68 to finish at 207.

Late Seattle Pacific goal downs Roadrunners

Seattle Pacific’s Jeremy Bonner scored with less than 11 minutes to play to break a 2-2 tie and give the Falcons a 3-2 victory over Metro State at Auraria Field. Bonner’s goal from about 50 feet came just two minutes after a game- tying goal by the Roadrunners’ Daniel Carpenter.

Pioneers take two to win Denver Invitational

The University of Denver volleyball team won its own tournament with two three-set victories. Amanda Millard’s 13 kills led the Pioneers over Montana, 30-20, 30-27, 30-21. Lisa Hunter hit 16 kills to lead DU past Northern Illinois, 30-28, 30-25, 30-26.
