Getting your player ready...

Junior forward Jeff Rogers of Colorado Springs has quit the University of Denver hockey team to pursue an internship with the investment firm Morgan Stanley.

“He couldn’t do both,” said Pioneers coach George Gwozdecky, who signed Rogers out of Cheyenne Mountain High School. Rogers played in just three games the past two seasons. Gwozdecky said Rogers would remain in school.

Also, DU’s player practices have begun, led by co-captains Gabe Gauthier and Matt Carle, and Gwozdecky and his staff are conducting small-group drills three days per week, the maximum allowed by the NCAA. Official practice opens Oct. 1. The Pioneers begin their quest for a third consecutive national title with a two-game series at Maine on Oct. 14-15. … DU strength coach Mike Sanders turned down a similar position from the Phoenix Coyotes. … Gwozdecky, an avid water skier, broke three ribs recently after jumping a wake at Grand Lake.
