Losing the hush money

Justin Leonard sat quietly among five teammates during his interview Wednesday, listening as Jim Furyk talked about whether the Presidents Cup that starts today in Gainesville, Va., evoked memories of the Ryder Cup last year or the Presidents Cup two years ago. Suddenly, Phil Mickelson spoke out. “Justin was talking about that last night on the bus about the difference,” Mickelson said. “Go ahead. Why don’t you tell him what you were saying last night?” Leonard rolled his eyes, as if he didn’t want to tell. Turns out there was another reason. “I just lost $100,” he said. “I bet Phil I could come here and not say a word.” Looking in mock anger at Mickelson, he said, “Thanks a lot.”

I bid $43 zillion … ha!

The helmet Robby Gordon threw at Michael Waltrip was pulled off auction site eBay on Wednesday after bidding exceeded $10 million. The site ended the auction because it was unable to verify the legitimacy of the bids and because Gordon didn’t have documentation showing he planned to donate the sale’s proceeds to charity, said eBay spokesman Hani Durzy. The helmet was relisted with the aid of AuctionCause, a site known for assisting fundraising efforts. “That sort of thing sometimes happens on high- profile listings. It’s what we call bogus bidding – people just bidding with no intention to pay for it,” Durzy said. “People sometimes do that because they think it is funny, and it’s not.”

Three cheers for a solid policy

Is it possible the real brains on the football field can be found jumping up and down behind the bench? Said Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleader Victoria Vodar in Playboy magazine, “During tryouts we had to take a football quiz.” She added: “I love football. You have to pay attention because you don’t want to cheer when something goes against your team.”
