Salt Lake City – What does the future hold for senior Air Force quarterback Adam Fitch?
That was a key question Thursday night after the Falcons lost their second straight Mountain West Conference game, 38-35 before 41,935 fans and a national television audience.
With the Falcons seemingly out of it at 38-21, Fitch came off the bench and rallied the Falcons to two touchdowns, leaving them with a chance to execute an onside kick with 1:08 remaining.
The Utes recovered the kick to run out the clock, but what about Fitch?
“I’m not going to answer that question until I see the films,” Air Force coach Fisher DeBerry snapped when asked if he would put Fitch into games more often.
DeBerry did credit his senior with rallying the Falcons in the fourth quarter after sophomore starter Shaun Carney’s troubles during the middle part of the game.
“We mishandled the pitch,” DeBerry said of a key execution flaw between Carney and halfback Kip McCarthy, which led to two Utah touchdowns in 17 seconds in the second quarter. That gave the Utes a 14-point lead.
“We didn’t make plays when we had to,” Carney said. “This is on my shoulders. I have to put it together.
“We couldn’t be stopped on our first couple of drives, then I don’t know what happened.”
