Just about smack in the middle of Colorado lies an expanse of short-grass prairie ringed by mountains that we call South Park. A drive around its northern half lets travelers escape the chaos of the city to a wide-open place shaped long ago by wind and water, and where elements of our ancient history and pioneer past are well-preserved. In August, Sen. Ken Salazar introduced federal legislation to designate South Park a National Heritage Area.
Journey through time starts on U.S. 285 in Bailey: About 90 miles along U.S. 285, Colorado 9 and U.S. 24 to the Florissant Fossil Beds.
