So far, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Denver is facing 10 lawsuits alleging it knew Harold Robert White was a molester and shuffled him from parish to parish. White was moved from parishes in Colorado Springs, Sterling and Aspen after allegations arose and given assignments elsewhere, parishioners contend.
The archdiocese, citing personnel policies, will not discuss its handling of claims against White. In letters to victims obtained by The Denver Post, Archbishop Charles Chaput has offered counseling and apologies.
Fran Maier, chancellor for the archdiocese, said the archdiocese has a sincere concern for victims and has offered to engage in mediation with the plaintiffs. In other dioceses, mediation has led to out-of-court settlements. Maier stressed the archdiocese also “has an obligation to defend the rights and resources of the people of the archdiocese.”
White, 72, did not respond to several interview requests.
Hiding behind his apartment door in August, White told a Denver TV station the allegations contained “half-truths.”
