Designed by Swiss firm, new de Young building reopens galleries of African, pre-Columbian art

For many decades, the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum was a regular stop for visitors to San Francisco. One of the West Coast’s most important art museums, it boasted a wide-ranging collection especially renowned for its superb holdings of American, pre-Columbian and African art. But in 1989, its historic building in Golden Gate Park suffered earthquake damage. Repairs offered it a short reprieve, but it was ultimately declared structurally unsound and razed in 2000. The museum, now known as just the de Young, will reopen Oct. 15 on the same site in a new building designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The Swiss architectural firm was also responsible for the recent, much- praised addition to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. During a free inaugural weekend celebration, the de Young will be open 29 hours straight from noon Oct. 15 through 5 p.m. Oct. 16. de Young, Golden Gate Park, 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive, 415-863-3330, deyoungmuseum.org

Affinia Gardens reworks Lyden Gardens, rebrands as a “Tranquil Suite Hotel”

There’s no question that some people travel to the Big Apple for the express purpose of leaping right into the thick of things, while others have had enough of the hustle and bustle. It is for the latter reason that Affinia has redone its Lyden property, making the Upper East Side locale in a residential neighborhood even quieter. The 130 suites, each with a full kitchen, come with the usual amenities, but the public spaces have been revamped, such as Serenity, the 24-hour quiet-

zone lounge featuring a tea bar. Guests can have a Tranquility chest sent to their rooms, with lavender linen spray, chair massager and floor pillows, and attend Tranquility hour, a wine-and-cheese reception with guided meditation. The entrance boasts a garden and koi pond. Take a deep breath, and mentally check out right after checking in. Affinia Gardens, 215 E. 64th St., 866-233-4642, affinia.com

Broadway Bar less crowded, cozier than owners’ other ventures – and that’s its appeal

Cedd Moses made clubbers crazy for his Golden Gopher and Liquid Kitty hot spots, and now he and new business partner Joe Baxley have a hit on their hands with the lower-key Broadway Bar, next to the Orpheum Theatre in the Historic Core district. The place would be a gem for the free parking after 7 p.m. alone, and add the casual, almost cozy lighting and the friendly staff, and this is so not a big-city spot. Smokers are relegated to the balcony, the circular bar makes for intense people-watching, and a well-varied CD jukebox and side-seating means couples can even pick a few tunes and pair off for romance.
