Golden – Colorado School of Mines held off a furious Fort Lewis fourth-quarter comeback to win 42-41 on Saturday at Brooks Field in a battle for second place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Mines (4-4, 4-1) kept pace with first-place Nebraska-Kearney (7-1, 5-0), which beat Chadron State 20-14.
Fort Lewis (4-3, 4-2), trailing 35-12, scored 29 points in the fourth quarter, as Matt Weaver’s 1-yard TD catch from Matt Gutierrez brought the Skyhawks to 42-41 with 27 seconds remaining.
But placekicker Mikael Bjork’s extra-point attempt failed and Mines held on to win. Bjork had connected on field goals of 20 and 48 yards.
Gutierrez led Fort Lewis with 353 yards on 19-of-32 passing and five touchdowns. He also ran for 132 yards on 23 carries.
Kris Ducy caught two Gutierrez passes for touchdowns in the fourth quarter. His 80- and 5-yard TD catches brought Fort Lewis to within 42-35.
Danny Medina completed 23-of-30 passes for 321 yards to lead the Orediggers. Justin Gallas returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to put Mines up 21-3. He also caught nine passes for 133 yards.
Adams State 34, Mesa State 31, 2OT
Alamosa – Adams State used a 35-yard Wayne Durham field goal in the second overtime to beat visiting Mesa State at Rex Stadium.
Durham’s field goal was his second timely kick of the day after a 42-yarder with three seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 24-24.
Scott Coxon completed 30-of-62 passes for 434 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Grizzlies. Dave Copelan caught nine passes for 149 yards, Chris Ross caught seven for 85 and Gene Mejia caught five for 102.
Ross caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Coxon to put Adams ahead 31-24 in the first overtime.
But Mesa’s Bobby Coy ran in a 1-yard touchdown to tie the game and force a second overtime.
Coy led the Mavericks with 106 yards on 27 carries. While Drew Bohannan caught five passes for 63 yards.
Western State 24, N.M. Highlands 20
Las Vegas, N.M. – JR Finley caught an 80-yard Daniel Brethauer pass for a touchdown with 4:29 left to play to beat New Mexico Highlands.
Finley’s score, his second receiving touchdown of the game, put the Mountaineers (1-7, 1-4) back in the lead after the Cowboys (1-7, 0-5) went ahead 20-17 with 10:38 remaining.
Brethauer threw for 248 yards on 18-of-41 passing and three touchdowns.
Johnny Ruff scored twice for Highlands, on runs of 30 and 7 yards. He finished with 80 yards on 14 carries to lead the Cowboys.
Huntingdon College 56, Colo. College 21
Montgomery, Ala. – Huntingdon College jumped to a 28-7 lead and cruised past Colorado College at Charles Lee Field. Mark Colson scored twice to put Huntingdon up 14-0 early in the second quarter. Ross Alisiani scored on a 26-yard reception from Scott Green, and the Tigers closed to 28-14 at halftime. But Huntingdon scored four TDs in the third quarter to pull away. Zach Golson threw 319 yards to lead Huntingdon. Green led CC with 308 passing yards.
