A Denver parent-student advocacy group pressed school and community leaders Tuesday to take Denver Public Schools reform seriously because the kids “are in a crisis.”

Because some teachers at poorer schools are less experienced, students at those schools are at a disadvantage, said Sanice Rhea, a Denver parent and member of the Metropolitan Organizations for People.

The organization held a “Call to Action” Tuesday in front of more than 500 people at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, imploring school leaders to work with the advocacy group in reforming DPS.

“I think we’ve talked so much, I’m ready to see something change,” Rhea said. “I think so far our biggest win is to get parents unified.” The group has worked to get DPS to adopt a more parent-friendly report card that spells out plainly for parents when a student isn’t at grade level or when a student needs improvement.

After DPS Superintendent Michael Bennet called the crowd the most “beautiful” and “diverse” group of people he’s addressed as superintendent, he committed to working with the group.
