Justin Wilson won the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, securing third place in the Champ Car season series.
Holding an 11-point lead over Canada’s Paul Tracy going into the season’s final event, Wilson took advantage of his second career pole and two good pit stops. He avoided big mistakes and led almost the entire race.
Wilson finished the race in 1 hour, 58 minutes, 23 seconds, followed by RuSPORT teammate A.J. Allmendinger of Thornton in 1:58.27.
Tracy managed to recover from a first-lap spinoff and an early penalty to finish third in 1:58.30.
Tracy steadily gained ground from last place and made his pivotal move in the 64th lap, when he jumped from sixth place to third in the straightaway.
Sebastien Bourdais of France, who entered the race with the season title already won, didn’t finish after crashing with Brazil’s Cristian da Matta in the 61st lap. It was the first time Bourdais didn’t complete a race this season.
Local hero Mario Dominguez took 12th place but was third going into the 51st lap, when he was bumped by German rookie Timo Glock, who finished fifth.
NHRA: Back-to-back top fuel champion Tony Schumacher added his name to a couple more records, capping a huge weekend and year for Don Schumacher Racing with a win at the 41st annual Auto Club of Southern California Finals.
Schumacher was joined by funny car’s Tony Pedregon, pro stock’s Jeg Coughlin and pro stock motorcycle’s Ryan Schnitz in the final winner’s circle celebration of the 2005 season.
The win was the fifth straight for Schumacher and marked his seventh consecutive final-round appearance.
