The Colorado Rockies were advised coveted right-hander Elmer Dessens was leaning heavily toward accepting a more lucrative two-year offer to join the Kansas City Royals.

“We were told he was heading in another direction,” general manager Dan O’Dowd said.

The Royals are prepared to guarantee about $900,000 more than the Rockies’ $2.5 million, two-year bid for the pitcher. That shifts Colorado’s focus to free-agent Brian Meadows and exploring trade opportunities for late-inning relievers.

As for a left-hander free agent, Chris Hammond remains a possibility, while Terry Mulholland’s agent Joe Bick said, “It’s not real likely that something will get done” with Colorado.
