New CDs in stores today are coming from the biggest-selling female pop artist of all time, a hot country duo working a crossover angle, and a respected indie rock/alt-country act playing live in their hometown.

Madonna, “Confessions on a Dance Floor” (Warner Bros.) Madonna has said her new record “is all about having a good time straight through and nonstop,” meaning it’s a full listen that doesn’t stop in its goodness. Given that Madonna has accomplished that only once – with the brilliant 1998 mid-career masterpiece “Ray of Light” – that could be a tough one. Judging from the first single, “Hung Up” (and its sketchy music video), this is more guilty pleasure than lasting masterwork.

Big & Rich, “Comin’ to Your City” (Warner Bros.) This anticipated follow-up to 2004’s “Horse of a Different Color” will prove Big & Rich’s true lasting value. They latched onto something in 2004 that established their connection with the American people – at least those who love crossover country music. We’ll see if they can keep that affair going strong.

Wilco, “Kicking Television: Live in Chicago” (Nonesuch) It’s hard to believe this is Wilco’s first official live release, but yes, the two-CD “Kicking Television” was recorded during the band’s sold-out four-night stint at Chicago’s Vic Theatre.
