Once top-ranked Duke got started Tuesday night, the Blue Devils were tough to stop.
Monique Currie scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to help Duke roll over Fairfield 110-44 in Durham, N.C.
Freshman guard Abby Waner, a graduate of ThunderRidge High School, made her first seven shots, including two 3-pointers, to score all 16 of her points in the first half as Duke built a 65-23 advantage.
“When Abby came in, she gave us some great energy on both ends of the court,” Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said.
Waner, the younger sister of sophomore transfer Emily Waner, said she wasn’t bothered by coming off the bench.
“I don’t really see it as an issue,” she said. “The way I see it, any of 13 players could start.”
Mistie Williams and Carrem Gay each added 14 points for Duke (3-0). Sabra Wrice scored 15 points and Cara Murphy added 10 to lead Fairfield (0-2).
“They’re not No. 1 for nothing,” Fairfield coach Dianne Nolan said of the Blue Devils. “They just have so many weapons.”
Duke scored 32 consecutive points in the first half to take control of the game. The Blue Devils missed eight of their first 10 shots, allowing Fairfield to take an 8-6 lead 4:36 into the game.
Fairfield had 11 turnovers in its next 16 possessions and went 0-for-10 from the floor over the next 7:46 of play.
Currie had her 20th double- double to help Duke score its most points since a 119-53 blowout of Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 29, 2003.
