Broncos running back Mike Anderson was fined $2,500 by the NFL for a cut block against the Jets in a 27-0 victory last Sunday. According to an NFL spokesman, Anderson was penalized on the play in the third quarter, but it was declined because Denver was in a punting situation.
While the league did slap Anderson, it did not fine Jets defensive lineman Shaun Ellis. He tripped and slammed Broncos tight end Stephen Alexander to the ground in the third quarter, starting a scuffle that ended with Broncos offensive tackle George Foster being tagged with unnecessary roughness. After the game, Alexander called the play “dirty” and said he expected Ellis to be fined.
The agent for Broncos special-teams ace Keith Burns said Friday his client told him a knee injury he suffered in the first quarter of Thursday’s win at Dallas wasn’t as bad as first thought. Agent David Hardin said Burns shouldn’t be out for an extended time, but he is awaiting more details. Denver next practices Monday.
Two local runners win regional race
Mohamud Ige of South High School and Keara Sammons of Smoky Hill won the boys and girls Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Midwest regionals at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha.
Ige, who qualified for his second national appearance, finished with a time of 14 minutes, 58 seconds after pulling ahead of Landon Peacock of Cedar Springs (Morley, Mich.) High School. The two ran tight, well ahead of the pack, until Ige broke free toward the end.
Sammons won with a time of 17:26. Second-place finisher Betsy Bies of Yankton (S.D.) High School led the pack from the 2-mile mark until Sammons, a two-time national qualifier, took the lead with 200 yards remaining to win. Bies finished at 17:29.
Crested Butte Academy’s Daniel Roberts, of Nicksburk, finished sixth in the boys race; Noah Shannon of Fort Collins High School was eighth. The top 10 boys and girls qualified for the national finals Saturday, Dec. 10, at Balboa Park in San Diego. Sammons was the only Coloradan to finish in the girls top 10.
