The Metro State women’s basketball team held off a late Winona (Minn.) State rally for a 72-69 victory Saturday in the Downtown Denver Classic at the Auraria Events Center.
Junior forward Jessica Grubb led the Roadrunners (3-1) with 14 points and sophomore guard Paige Powers added 12. Winona State’s Jamie Majerowicz led all scorers with 16 points.
Metro State had a 37-31 halftime lead over Winona State (2-3).
The Roadrunners outscored Winona State 36-28 in the paint.
Wayne State 57, Adams State 42: Wayne State (4-1) had two players score in double figures – Kristen Humphries with 12 points and Amanda Walker with 11 – in a victory over Adams State at the Auraria Events Center. Isil Ozkan led Adams State (1-3) with 12 points.
CSU-Pueblo 67, Central Washington 66: CSU-Pueblo edged Central Washington with the help of 22-point efforts from Kerry Lewis and Lauren Westerman.
Lewis added eight rebounds and Westerman shot 10-for-16 from the field.
Hanna Hull scored 15 points for Central Washington.
Men
Mesa State 82, Johnson & Wales 57: Mesa State (4-0) routed visiting Johnson & Wales.
Stephen Soriano scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Mavericks, with Kurt Bangle adding 17 points, Andy Classick 14 and Darnell Jones 10.
Danny Lopez had a team-high 17 points for Johnson & Wales.
Western State 70, Southwestern Oklahoma 59: Stan Harley scored a game-high 18 points, leading Western State (1-2) over Southwestern Oklahoma in Canyon, Texas.
Steve Barrow scored 13 points and Lou Correa added 10 for Western State.
Fort Lewis 77, Simpson 58: Fort Lewis jumped to a 47-30 halftime lead and cruised past Simpson University in Grand Junction.
Tim Bieri scored a game-high 19 points for Fort Lewis, with Ryan Johnson adding 14 points and Devoin Manning 10.
Markise Morrison scored 17 points to lead Simpson.
Colorado College 85, Bethany 77: Nate Brodman hit five 3-pointers and scored a game- high 27 points, leading Colorado College in the championship game of the CC/Clarion Thanksgiving Invitational tournament.
Nick Rogerson scored 17 points for the Tigers, Michael Nash added 13 and Adam Mares, a 6-foot-6 senior forward from Thornton and the tournament’s MVP, contributed 11.
The Tigers led 44-42 early in the second half, then went on a 21-10 run. CC closed the game by going 13-of-16 at the free-throw line in the final five minutes.
