Winterfest

If it’s winter, it must be time for Winterfest.

Since 1986, Coors, better known for its mass-produced lagers, has released Winterfest, another lager akin to a German marzen or Vienna lager, moderately more flavorful than the brewer’s usual products but lighter than last year’s version.

Originally made for in-house enjoyment only, Winterfest went statewide in ’86 and, at various times, has been distributed nationally. It’s back on the national stage this year. It is, says the Golden brewer, “the nation’s longest-running seasonal brew.”

The current release (“Brewed Once a Year in Celebration of the Season”) will be familiar to fans of the beer. It’s got a nice ruby color but not much of an aroma. Devotees of strong winter beers will find Winterfest a little tame, but it is well-balanced, with a nice hop bite. And, at 5.6 percent alcohol (by volume), it’s a touch stronger than its flavor profile would indicate.

Winterfest is available on tap and in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles ($6.49) through January.
