Q: Scott,
Well, you wanted questions so here is a new one from me. I was just diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis after living with the pain for over six months.
I don’t want sympathy, but when people ask me what is wrong I tell them.
I am going to physical therapy and trying to lose weight, because my weight problem impacts my back.
Some people have made the comment that if I wasn’t so fat it would not have been as big as a problem. I have even had a co-worker tell me to just get off my ‘seat’ and do some running.
But part of the problem is that standing and walking cause me extreme pain.
How do I respond to these people that think they are doing me a favor by reminding me that I am very overweight? I am working on the problem, but since I did not put on the pounds overnight, the will not come off overnight.
How can I respond to these people without smacking them on the back of the head, which is what I would really like to do?
SCOTT: It’s great all these people (who obviously care about you) want to try to help, but when you’re pushed beyond your limits, simply tell them you can’t and you’re just following doctor’s orders.
Who could argue with that?
