Aurora – A woman charged with child abuse after her son was mauled by pit bulls was shot early this morning, and the suspect remains at large.

Police say Renee Denise Muniz, 37, was shot in her upper torso and is in critical condition at an area hospital. A man also was shot during the incident

The shooting happened around 2 a.m., at 10693 E. Exposition Ave., in Aurora.

Police say that when they arrived at the scene, they found Muniz and an unidentified man suffering from gunshot wounds.

A witness told police she was involved in a domestic dispute and was at the apartment to get some belongings. She says Muniz and the male victim went with her for support.

While at the apartment, the witness says the man she had been arguing with approached from behind, shot Muniz and fled. The male victim then chased the shooting suspect, got into a fight with him and was shot. His name and condition have not been released, but police say his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Police identify the shooting suspect as 25-year-old Thomas Charles Taylor. Taylor is considered armed and dangerous.

Muniz was charged with child abuse, cruelty to animals and unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog after her son, Gregg Jones, was mauled by his family’s own pit bulls.

Jones had to undergo facial reconstruction surgery and had one of his arms amputated after the attack.

Anyone with information regarding this case, or the whereabouts of Taylor, is asked to call Det. Parvin at 303-739-1844.
