The Voice was heard.
Alan Roach, morning sports man on KOA 850-AM, made his presence felt at Super Bowl XL. His booming voice was the one you heard in the pregame introductions of former MVPs, the pregame musical show and the halftime performance by the Rolling Stones.
Roach was still giddy when he reported his SBXL experience to his “Colorado’s Morning News” cohorts Monday morning. “It was a tremendous opportunity. I had to keep pinching myself – ‘I’m doing the Super Bowl!”‘
Unfortunately, he never got close to any of the stars. Of course, he was sort of busy, too, except at halftime when “I had nothing going on. I did get to enjoy the whole thing.”
He had little time to revel in his moment. He left Monday for his next assignment – public-address announcer for the men’s hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.
“I have to get there, figure out how things work.”

Most popular Super Bowl commercial? Depends on which survey you believe. MediaPost reported Monday that Ameriquest’s “Friendly Skies” and “That Killed Him” finished 1-2, according to a survey of 10,000 TiVo households.
But USA Today says Anheuser-Busch’s “Secret Refrigerator” was atop its AdMeter poll while media-services company ICOM’s quickie postgame poll chose Federal Express’s “Caveman” spot.
KOA on top
Buoyed by the Broncos’ season, KOA 850-AM took the top spot in the winter Arbitron ratings. The period, which ended in January, was especially fruitful for KOSI 101.1-FM, riding its round-the-clock Christmas music orgy, rose to a second-place tie with another perennial leader KYGO 98.5-FM.
Left without an issue to grab listeners, it was not a good time for talk-show stations: KHOW 630-AM and KKZN 760-AM experiencing slight declines.
The rankings: KOA, 6.4; KYGO, 6.0; KOSI, 6.0; KRFX 103.5-FM, 4.9; KBCO, 97.3-FM, 4.9; KQKS 107.5-FM, 4.7; KXKL 105.1-FM, 4.1; KBPI 106.7-FM, 3.7; KTCL, 93.3-FM, 3.2; and KEZW 1430-AM, 2.8.
Around the dial
Jeff Mielcarz and a crew from The Weather Channel are in Vail through Friday “to see how the weather plays a part in what the locals do.” Skiing and shoveling would be my guess. No airdates for the episodes have been set … Super hangover: Ed Scott didn’t want to watch The Rolling Stones at halftime so he surfed and found a similar show on KBDI-Channel 12: “Antiques Roadshow.” … My friend John Mason isn’t given to fits of ire but he was steamed at a Frontier Airlines’ Super Bowl ad which referenced “Civic Center Park.” No such place … Quotable: “That’s enough,” Michael Floorwax on The Stones’ halftime performance.
