Gusty winds spread a fire quickly through a two-story brick and stucco home early this afternoon, leaving the structure gutted and smoldering.
No one was home at the Hackbart residence at 17709 W. 58th Drive, located near the quick-moving grass fire that tore through nearby North Table Mountain last summer.
“A neighbor called and said, ‘Your deck is on fire,”‘ said David Hackbart, son of homeowners Terry and Martha Hackbart. He said he raced home, got his SUV out of the garage and then watched as flames shot 20 feet in the air, threatening the house next door.
His father was out of town and his mother was at work, David Hackbart said. His sister, Jessica, was driving home and saw the smoke.
The cause of the blaze is unknown and will be investigated by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “The winds obviously played a role in spreading the fire,” said sheriff’s spokeswoman Jacki Kelley.
Responding to the blaze were the Fairmount, Arvada and Golden fire departments. The home is located in unincorporated Jefferson County but the mailing address is in Arvada.
Neighbor Albert Fosmire, 14, said he and his mother at first thought the smoke was dust. “We’ve been getting high winds over here,” he said.
