J.C. Penney
J.C. Penney opened a butcher shop on Main Street in Longmont in 1898. After the business failed, he worked for T.M. Callahan’s Golden Rule Store in Longmont. Penney then set up a Golden Rule Store in Kemmerer, Wyo., which began his retail empire.

Fund set up to replace backhoe
A relief fund has been established for a couple who lost their backhoe during the Mauricio Canyon fire on Jan. 7.
Butch and Betty Morgan’s land did not burn, but their Case backhoe – the machine they used to earn a living – was lost in the fire.
The backhoe was paid off in December, but new insurance had not taken effect. The Morgan Backhoe Fund has been established at First National Bank, P.O. Box 759, Trinidad, CO 81082.

Explorer Scouts take top awards
A dozen Explorer Scouts from the metro area with interests in law enforcement recently took two first-place awards at a national competition in Chandler, Ariz.
The team of Explorers, ranging in age from 16 to 20, represented the Brighton Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
The group took first place in the overall category and for a video production. Brett Pinover of the Jefferson County post took second place in pistol shooting. The group finished fourth in the downed-officer rescue category.
The explorers were Moncerrato Portillo, Andrea Heredia, Stephanie Southard, James Snapp and Shannon Cvancara, all of Brighton; Brett Pinover, Kyle Youngs, Lee Hammond, Georgina Leech, Stephanie Bender and Robert Sobek, all of Jefferson County; and Amanda Ramirez of Adams County.
The award-winning Explorers will be recognized at a ceremony at the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, 200 Jefferson County Parkway, in Golden at 6 p.m. Feb. 22.
About 700 Explorer Scouts competed in the competition last month, representing 27 police agencies from across the country.
AURORA
Library program to help parents
Aurora Public Library will host the “Ready to Learn” program for parents of children preparing to enter school, offering the course twice in the next two months.
The free workshop, presented by Rocky Mountain PBS, instructs parents on how to build children’s learning and reading skills. The workshops’ topics include problem-solving, literacy and life skills as well as appreciation of music and art.
Workshops are scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at Tallyn’s Reach Library, 23911 E. Arapahoe Road, and from 10 to 11 a.m. March 16 at the Aurora Central Library, 14949 E. Alameda Parkway.
Participants will receive free books, tools and information to use with their children.
