Injury could prevent Philadelphia Flyers center Peter Forsberg from playing for Sweden.
Forsberg, the Flyers’ leading scorer, didn’t participate in Thursday’s drills because of a groin injury and will miss his seventh consecutive game tonight against the Washington Capitals. He plans to decide this weekend on whether he will travel to Turin for the Olympics.
“It’s a hard decision,” said Forsberg, who missed the 2002 Olympics because of an injury. “I want to be there for my country, but I don’t want to get injured again.”
Sweden’s first game is Wednesday against Kazakhstan and teams must submit their final roster Tuesday.
Forsberg could miss the early rounds and return for the quarterfinals if Sweden advances.
Slovakia: Pittsburgh Penguins left wing Tomas Surovy will replace Ladislav Nagy of the Phoenix Coyotes on Slovakia’s team. Nagy had surgery on his right knee Friday and is expected to miss the rest of the NHL regular season.
The team also named Los Angeles Kings forward Pavol Demitra its team captain.
Germany: Buffalo Sabres forward Jochen Hecht will miss the Games because of a sprained knee.
Canada: Goaltender Jose Theodore has tested positive for a banned substance in pre- Olympic screening because he was using a hair-growth drug that can be used as a masking agent, the Montreal Canadiens’ team doctor said. The test wasn’t part of the NHL’s new testing program, so he will not be subject to league discipline.
Theodore was not picked for Canada’s Olympic team, but was on the preliminary 81-player eligibility list. He is appealing the result.
Canadiens team doctor David Mulder said Theodore tested positive because the goalie has been taking Propecia, a hair- growth stimulant, for about eight years – although he has a full head of hair.
