House lawmakers today gave preliminary approval to House Bill 1125, which makes not wearing a seatbelt a primary offense.
Currently, not wearing a seatbelt is a secondary offense, which means it is illegal but motorists cannot be pulled over for it. They can only be ticketed if they were pulled over for something else.
After what was an emotional debate, lawmakers voted 33-32 to move the bill forward. It is expected to get a final House vote tomorrow and, if passed, moves on to the Senate.
