Seeing Janet Elway at Thursday night’s kickoff for her June 24 Janet’s Camp party reminded me a little bit of Sally Field at the Oscars. Elway was genuinely touched by the affection the crowd showed her. “You like me,” she seemed to be saying.
But Denver has always liked Janet Elway. And lending her marquee name to this event, which will send 250 kids to the YMCA’s Day Camp this summer, gives the town a way to show her.
“People are really excited about this,” she told me before the Saks “Campy Couture” fashion show in the store. “They seem so happy, and that’s a good thing.”
Ch. 4’s Marcia Neville emceed as a dorky camper. Head counselors Jean Galloway and Elway talked a bit about the benefit, which will take over Elway’s house and grounds with society types playing camper games. It was Galloway who twisted Elway’s arm to do the party. “I was still licking my wounds and not sure I was really ready,” she said. “But how do you say ‘no’ to Jean Galloway?”
Elway, a champion swimmer, also noted that she learned to swim at a Y summer camp when she was 5.
The fashion show brought to the runway some big-name sports supporters: David and Susie Duval, John and Linda Lynch, Ed and Lisa McCaffrey, Mike and Peggy Shanahan, Gary and Nicole Gait among them.
Calling all coeds
Christie Hefner, daughter of Hef and CEO of Playboy Enterprises, delivers the keynote address March 15 at the Business for the Arts Awards luncheon.
And reps from Playboy are in Boulder today and Tuesday looking for bona fide female CU students eager to appear in the October “Girls of the Big 12” issue.
They say they are conducting interviews and taking a few pics at an “undisclosed” hotel to keep things private for the women trying out. So call 312-315-7342 if you’re interested.
In a newspaper ad that ran in Boulder, Playboy proudly notes that it’s not a bad thing to appear in the magazine. “Many have gone on to become Playboy Playmates, models and actresses. Even more have become doctors, lawyers, professors, business and government professionals, wives and moms.”
Dog days
In a recent moviefone.com interview between Boulder native Kristin Davis and Denver native Tim Allen, Allen remembers the first time he saw “The Shaggy Dog” – with its crummy special effects.
“But it motivated me because I remember when I saw it at the Esquire Theatre in Denver, Colo., it was wait in line,” Allen says. “Kids waited in line. There was this huge Disney film, and it was a guy turns into a dog.”
