Harp Lager

If it’s green, it ain’t beer.

St. Patrick’s Day is upon us – and it’s on a Friday, leading to who-knows-what – which means it’s time to think Irish beer.

Guinness, of course, springs to mind but for those who like their brews lighter and colder, there’s Guinness’ cousin, Harp Lager.

Other than the fact that it originally was made in Dundalk, Ireland, there’s little to pinpoint Harp as an Irish beer – in fact, the U.S. market is now supplied by a brewery in Canada. Nor is there much, other than a slight malt sweetness, to distinguish it from the multitude of lagers, Bud and Coors among them, on the market.

Introduced in 1960 to capture the growing lager market in the U.K., it’s actually based on a German recipe from a German brewer. But aren’t we all Irish on that special day?

It’s $7.99 a six-pack but tastes better if you can find it on tap.
