Elway’s purchase of Crush a top AFL moment
The Arena Football League is celebrating its 20th season in a number of ways, one of which is the league’s historical committee selecting the top 20 greatest moments in AFL history. The league’s approval of John Elway’s ownership of the Crush was deemed the sixth-greatest, tied with the NFL’s amendment to its bylaws that allowed NFL owners to buy AFL teams. Elway, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and Pepsi Center owner Stan Kroenke were approved as Crush owners in August 2001.
The No. 1 greatest moment occurred Feb. 11, 1981, when NFL promotion manager Jim Foster attended a Major Indoor Soccer League All-Star Game in New York and turned to a co-worker and said, “You could play football indoors,” sketching out a gridiron on a manila envelope.
