The University of Northern Colorado has fired women’s basketball coach Ron Vlasin, the Greeley Tribune reported Thursday. “This totally took me by surprise,” Vlasin told the paper. Vlasin, 62, compiled a 13-15 record last season, his fifth, with wins over Illinois and Marquette.
Colorado College women’s soccer joins C-USA
Colorado College’s lone Division I women’s program, soccer, will join Conference USA for the 2006 season, the school announced. CC is replacing Tulane, which temporarily dropped women’s soccer and seven other sports after Hurricane Katrina.
DU faces top foes at regional gymnastics meet
The NCAA North Central women’s gymnastics tournament in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday is the only regional that has all six of its teams ranked among the top 25 nationally. No. 19 Denver needs to finish among the top two to advance to nationals April 20-22 in Corvallis, Ore.
The Pioneers (18-5), led by Heather Huffaker, who is ranked No. 14 nationally in vault and No. 21 in all-around, will face meet host Iowa State, ranked No. 4, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 15 Arizona, No. 21 Minnesota and No. 24 BYU.

CHL’s Blazers even series with Eagles
The Oklahoma City Blazers of the Central Hockey League got two goals from Justin Chwedoruk in a 6-3 victory over the Colorado Eagles at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City. The seven-game series is tied 2-2, with today’s 7 p.m. game at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.
