A 32-year-old babysitter has been arrested in connection with fatal injuries to a 5-month- old boy in her care, said Adams County sheriff’s Sgt. Louis Dixon.
The boy, whose name wasn’t released, died Monday at Children’s Hospital, he said.
Laura Cervantes was arrested Monday for child abuse resulting in death, Dixon said. She is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
The infant’s mother had dropped the baby off at Cervantes’ home in unincorporated Adams County just north of Denver about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Dixon said. About 8 a.m. that morning, Cervantes found the child unresponsive and took him to a clinic near her home.
Cervantes was told to take the baby to an emergency room immediately, and she took him to St. Anthony North Hospital, saying the baby was sick.
An emergency-room doctor there felt the baby might have a severe head injury, and the baby was flown by helicopter to Children’s Hospital, Dixon said.
“The baby was receiving medical treatment until yesterday (Monday) morning when he lost the battle and was pronounced dead,” Dixon said in a statement.
After being interviewed by investigators Monday, Cervantes was arrested, he said.
“It’s been an ongoing investigation,” Dixon said.
He said the woman also cares for another child, but he didn’t know if she was caring for it Thursday morning.
